I needed to find something to give back.”&nbsp;</p> <p>He found it in ĚŇ×ÓĘÓƵ’s human services program. After four failed college attempts and 11 years later, Stockton went back to the college’s Norwich Campus, graduating with an associate degree in human services in 2024. He’s continuing his philanthropic journey, pursuing a Bachelor of Professional Studies degree in human services leadership at Morrisville.&nbsp;</p> <p>His skills and knowledge are already opening doors. While searching for an internship, Stockton was offered a job at Children’s Home of Wyoming Conference (CHoWC), where he is a youth coach and the team lead for the Youth Empowerment and Support (YES) program in Chenango County.&nbsp;</p> <p>“Jon was a great addition to our team,” said Terry Potter, county director for CHoWC. “He is an individual who puts all of his effort and heart into all that he does and this really comes through in his work. His life experiences and his knowledge and ability to connect with people and families and youth brings so much credibility to youth and families.”</p> <p>“From my first client, I was hooked,” Stockton said of his gratifying work. “Even on the hard days working with clients, when I know progress has been made, it satisfies an intrinsic need I struggle to even put into words.”</p> <p>But the actions and deeds of the Norwich, New York, resident flow with ease, speaking volumes of his heartfelt mission.&nbsp; &nbsp;</p> <p>“My goal now is to help take the people who have been largely written off and help transform them into the assets of tomorrow, especially the kids.&nbsp;</p> <p>“It’s all about paying it forward,” Stockton said. “I want to make a difference in Chenango County and Central New York.”</p> <p>He already is.</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author field--type-entity-reference field--label-inline"> <div class="field__label">Author</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/author-profiles/franci-valenzano" hreflang="en">Franci Valenzano</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-body-content field--type-entity-reference-revisions field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"> <div class="paragraph paragraph--type--left-image paragraph--view-mode--default"> <div class="field field--name-field-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <picture> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/giant_square_650_x_650_/public/2025-06/league-002.webp?h=6c83441f&amp;itok=nZyGsGWi 1x" media="all and (min-width: 992px)" type="image/webp" width="650" height="650"> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/max_1300x1300/public/2025-06/league-002.webp?itok=6zC35rvd 300w, /sites/default/files/styles/giant_square_650_x_650_/public/2025-06/league-002.webp?h=6c83441f&amp;itok=nZyGsGWi 650w" media="all and (min-width: 608px) and (max-width: 991px)" type="image/webp" sizes="100vw" width="300" height="300"> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/large/public/2025-06/league-002.webp?itok=SEmNDP8P 480w, /sites/default/files/styles/giant_square_650_x_650_/public/2025-06/league-002.webp?h=6c83441f&amp;itok=nZyGsGWi 650w" media="(max-width: 607px)" type="image/webp" sizes="100vw" width="480" height="480"> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/giant_square_650_x_650_/public/2025-06/league-002.jpg?h=6c83441f&amp;itok=nZyGsGWi 1x" media="all and (min-width: 992px)" type="image/jpeg" width="650" height="650"> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/max_1300x1300/public/2025-06/league-002.jpg?itok=6zC35rvd 300w, /sites/default/files/styles/giant_square_650_x_650_/public/2025-06/league-002.jpg?h=6c83441f&amp;itok=nZyGsGWi 650w" media="all and (min-width: 608px) and (max-width: 991px)" type="image/jpeg" sizes="100vw" width="300" height="300"> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/large/public/2025-06/league-002.jpg?itok=SEmNDP8P 480w, /sites/default/files/styles/giant_square_650_x_650_/public/2025-06/league-002.jpg?h=6c83441f&amp;itok=nZyGsGWi 650w" media="(max-width: 607px)" type="image/jpeg" sizes="100vw" width="480" height="480"> <img loading="eager" width="650" height="650" src="/sites/default/files/styles/giant_square_650_x_650_/public/2025-06/league-002.jpg?h=6c83441f&amp;itok=nZyGsGWi" alt="Jonathon Stockton"> </picture> </div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-content field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item"><h2>Jonathon’s story</h2> <p>It’s Monday night and Stockton is winding down from a long day. In addition to working his full-time job at CHoWC, he took an online class toward his degree and worked on a podcast to empower youth.&nbsp;</p> <p>Before the day ended, he took time out to sit on a park bench and talk to teenager Mason O’Neil. As the two&nbsp;engaged in a one-on-one game of basketball, their dynamic commanded the court.&nbsp;</p> <p>“You got this” wasn’t just about the basket Stockton was encouraging O’Neil to make. It’s the mantra of his life — instilling hope and empowering others.&nbsp;</p> <p>“He gets me. He just understands me,” said O’Neil, beaming as he dribbled the ball around the court.&nbsp; &nbsp;</p> <p>O’Neil, a 16-year-old student at Norwich Central School, is one of the youths Stockton has empowered through his work at CHoWC.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field__item"> <div class="paragraph paragraph--type--full-width-text paragraph--view-mode--default"> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-content field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item"><p>In his role, Stockton helps youth find their way, empowering them and cultivating healthy relationships for positive futures. He helped O’Neil get on track to graduate and got him excited about school again.&nbsp;</p> <p>There are countless others whose lives Stockton has touched, but he’s modest in saying so.&nbsp;</p> <p>“I wanted to help the way I had been helped,” he said. “The community had given me a lot of chances, as well as teachers, a judge and counselors — people who helped me find my way. There was lots of compassion, lots of understanding and not a lot of judgment.”</p> <p>Compassion came from many places, including a counselor, who later became his wife, and encouraged him to go back to college.&nbsp;</p> <p>“Nicole is my constant companion, inspiration and main support,” Stockton said of his wife. “She has been the light of my life for more than six years. If I have been successful, it is because of her.”</p> <p>The Norwich Campus also played a role in helping him thrive thanks to a flexible schedule that enabled the non-traditional student to juggle a job and family life. A strong sense of community, inherent in all aspects of the school, further ignited his motivation and growth.&nbsp;</p> <p>He excelled academically, making the President’s List for three semesters, as well as the Dean’s List. He immersed himself in activities, including participating in the Norwich Campus Journal Author’s Celebration, where he was recognized for his article, “From Darkness to Dignity: A Profile of Preston Manor,” in the Chenango County Historical Society’s history journal. He continues to tutor at the college and for three school districts.&nbsp;</p> <p>“The Norwich Campus has this great embracing of creativity,” Stockton said. “There is a genuine, heartfelt sense of community where ideas are encouraged.”&nbsp;</p> <p>A source behind that sentiment is Julie Burton, associate professor of social science and coordinator of the human services program and the Human Services Institute, whose strong guidance and mentorship have manifested many graduates’ purpose.&nbsp; &nbsp;</p> <p>“Dr. Burton has an aura of wisdom and experience that she exudes,” Stockton said. “The word inspirational just doesn’t do it justice.”&nbsp;</p> <p>Burton has been instrumental in the human services program’s growth, developing a certificate program and forming the Human Services Institute, an ongoing partnership with the college’s human services program, faculty and staff, and human service professionals in Norwich and throughout Chenango and Madison counties.&nbsp;</p> <p>She also developed the college’s first Bachelor of Professional Studies degree in human services leadership, which is offered online and in-person at the Morrisville and Norwich campuses. The bachelor’s degree program expands on the associate degree and prepares students for leadership positions in human services agencies, graduate work in social work, business administration, or to start their own nonprofit or social entrepreneurial enterprise. It helped elevate Stockton to his current supervisory position.</p> <p>Additionally, Burton has written three microcredentials for the college as part of a large grant project between SUNY and the New York State Office for People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD), and through the Human Services Institute, formed a Leadership Academy offering training for new and aspiring nonprofit leaders in the community.</p> <p>Her impact has spread to the community, where many of her graduates are making their mark.&nbsp;</p> <p>“So many people who had Dr. Burton in their educational path — the face of what social work looks like in Chenango County is changing and Dr. Burton will be instrumental in that,” Stockton said. “She inspired these students who are making strides in the field because of what she instilled in them.</p> <p>“My prediction is that five, 10 or 20 years from now, if there is one person who we look back and say they changed human services, in general, for Chenango County, it will be the influence of Dr. Burton,” he said.&nbsp;</p> <p>As the demands for social workers increases, ĚŇ×ÓĘÓƵ is addressing critical community needs, producing graduates in the human services field prepared to address them.&nbsp;</p> <p>“I believe the ĚŇ×ÓĘÓƵ human services degrees and certificate program have a responsibility to provide education and experiential learning opportunities so that our graduates can take a leadership role in providing services through counseling, advocacy, case management or creating new nonprofit agencies for the most vulnerable people in the community,” Burton said.&nbsp;</p> <p>Internships play a vital role in students’ developing critical leadership and for Stockton — to pave new ground. During his internship with the Liberty Partnership Program, he helped devise a mentoring program between middle and high school students in the Norwich City School District.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field__item"> <div class="paragraph paragraph--type--right-image paragraph--view-mode--default"> <div class="field field--name-field-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <picture> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/giant_square_650_x_650_/public/news/promotional-images/league-003.webp?h=6c83441f&amp;itok=C_ozAX8z 1x" media="all and (min-width: 992px)" type="image/webp" width="650" height="650"> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/max_1300x1300/public/news/promotional-images/league-003.webp?itok=TiF9EV0J 300w, /sites/default/files/styles/giant_square_650_x_650_/public/news/promotional-images/league-003.webp?h=6c83441f&amp;itok=C_ozAX8z 650w" media="all and (min-width: 608px) and (max-width: 991px)" type="image/webp" sizes="100vw" width="300" height="300"> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/large/public/news/promotional-images/league-003.webp?itok=awd_GixX 480w, /sites/default/files/styles/giant_square_650_x_650_/public/news/promotional-images/league-003.webp?h=6c83441f&amp;itok=C_ozAX8z 650w" media="(max-width: 607px)" type="image/webp" sizes="100vw" width="480" height="480"> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/giant_square_650_x_650_/public/news/promotional-images/league-003.jpg?h=6c83441f&amp;itok=C_ozAX8z 1x" media="all and (min-width: 992px)" type="image/jpeg" width="650" height="650"> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/max_1300x1300/public/news/promotional-images/league-003.jpg?itok=TiF9EV0J 300w, /sites/default/files/styles/giant_square_650_x_650_/public/news/promotional-images/league-003.jpg?h=6c83441f&amp;itok=C_ozAX8z 650w" media="all and (min-width: 608px) and (max-width: 991px)" type="image/jpeg" sizes="100vw" width="300" height="300"> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/large/public/news/promotional-images/league-003.jpg?itok=awd_GixX 480w, /sites/default/files/styles/giant_square_650_x_650_/public/news/promotional-images/league-003.jpg?h=6c83441f&amp;itok=C_ozAX8z 650w" media="(max-width: 607px)" type="image/jpeg" sizes="100vw" width="480" height="480"> <img loading="eager" width="650" height="650" src="/sites/default/files/styles/giant_square_650_x_650_/public/news/promotional-images/league-003.jpg?h=6c83441f&amp;itok=C_ozAX8z" alt="Jonathon Stockton and Mason O'Neal"> </picture> </div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-content field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item"><h2>A cause larger than life</h2> <p>The driving force behind Stockton’s career is using his own story as a tool. “It is integral to how I gain trust,” he said.</p> <p>A tender-hearted nature and a voice filled with positive energy add to his allure.&nbsp;</p> <p>“I don’t try to say I know what it is like, but I do have an idea,” Stockton said. “I know what it is like to grow up without a parent present, with having the lights shut off and to have no food in the house. After completing his performance in Ben Stiller’s “Escape at Dannemora” in 2018, he moved to LA where he has been acting, producing, writing and working in a variety of roles in the entertainment industry, including set construction, directing and video editing.&nbsp;</p> <p>He has amassed more than 125 nominations and 80 awards for his work. Among them are multiple awards for his short film, “The Can,” including Best Actor, Best Filmmaker and Best Director. Co-directed by Danielle Purdy, an American film, television and theatre actress and makeup artist, LaValley wrote, produced and acted in the film he describes as a loose take on his own struggles.&nbsp;</p> <p>“From the very start, I wanted to create works that showcase a part of my life experience. To allow the audience to see that they are not alone in their struggles, whatever they may be,” he said in a statement after his film took numerous wins at the prestigious Las Vegas-based Film Festival, Vegas Movie Awards.™</p> <p>Being on the red carpet, whether for one of his films at film festivals/award shows, or for award shows in general, is both a humbling and exhilarating experience for LaValley. “Seeing all the amazing people come together to celebrate and promote their amazing work in the industry is always a blessing for me.”</p> <p>In addition to acting, LaValley is producing and shooting a short, live-action film called “Good Boy.” At just eight minutes long, the film will feature the story of two characters who find an unlikely friendship to show the powerful impact of the family-friend dynamic.</p> <p>But it wasn’t always glitz and glimmer for the Emmy-award winning actor. The ĚŇ×ÓĘÓƵ baseball cap is a reminder of how the college played a role in his rise to fame in Hollywood.</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author field--type-entity-reference field--label-inline"> <div class="field__label">Author</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/author-profiles/katie-navarra" hreflang="en">Katie Navarra</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-body-content field--type-entity-reference-revisions field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="field__item"> <div class="paragraph paragraph--type--left-image paragraph--view-mode--default"> <div class="field field--name-field-image field--type-image field--label-hidden field__item"> <picture> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/giant_square_650_x_650_/public/2025-06/Shadow-lavalley-02.webp?h=6c83441f&amp;itok=x51I1Kbg 1x" media="all and (min-width: 992px)" type="image/webp" width="650" height="650"> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/max_1300x1300/public/2025-06/Shadow-lavalley-02.webp?itok=TuBU2cL- 300w, /sites/default/files/styles/giant_square_650_x_650_/public/2025-06/Shadow-lavalley-02.webp?h=6c83441f&amp;itok=x51I1Kbg 650w" media="all and (min-width: 608px) and (max-width: 991px)" type="image/webp" sizes="100vw" width="300" height="300"> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/large/public/2025-06/Shadow-lavalley-02.webp?itok=895uSxPJ 480w, /sites/default/files/styles/giant_square_650_x_650_/public/2025-06/Shadow-lavalley-02.webp?h=6c83441f&amp;itok=x51I1Kbg 650w" media="(max-width: 607px)" type="image/webp" sizes="100vw" width="480" height="480"> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/giant_square_650_x_650_/public/2025-06/Shadow-lavalley-02.jpg?h=6c83441f&amp;itok=x51I1Kbg 1x" media="all and (min-width: 992px)" type="image/jpeg" width="650" height="650"> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/max_1300x1300/public/2025-06/Shadow-lavalley-02.jpg?itok=TuBU2cL- 300w, /sites/default/files/styles/giant_square_650_x_650_/public/2025-06/Shadow-lavalley-02.jpg?h=6c83441f&amp;itok=x51I1Kbg 650w" media="all and (min-width: 608px) and (max-width: 991px)" type="image/jpeg" sizes="100vw" width="300" height="300"> <source srcset="/sites/default/files/styles/large/public/2025-06/Shadow-lavalley-02.jpg?itok=895uSxPJ 480w, /sites/default/files/styles/giant_square_650_x_650_/public/2025-06/Shadow-lavalley-02.jpg?h=6c83441f&amp;itok=x51I1Kbg 650w" media="(max-width: 607px)" type="image/jpeg" sizes="100vw" width="480" height="480"> <img loading="eager" width="650" height="650" src="/sites/default/files/styles/giant_square_650_x_650_/public/2025-06/Shadow-lavalley-02.jpg?h=6c83441f&amp;itok=x51I1Kbg" alt="Shadow LaValley at the Hollywood Roosevelt Oscar’s viewing party."> </picture> </div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-content field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item"><h2>Chasing the NASCAR dream</h2> <p>LaValley describes himself as a scrawny, shy kid in school who was more into NASCAR than theater. In fact, his post-high school plans were to work in the stock car industry. Late in his senior year of high school, his mom asked him to play the role of Will in the musical, “Oklahoma.”</p> <p>“The student who originally was cast in the role dropped out because he realized he had to kiss Ado Annie,” he reminisced. “My mom was a teacher at the school and approached me about doing it. She said I could end high school with a bang.”</p> <p>It took some convincing, but he agreed, thinking it might be his only time on stage. After graduation, LaValley applied to multiple mechanical engineering programs and ultimately chose ĚŇ×ÓĘÓƵ.&nbsp;</p> <p>He dropped out following his first semester then briefly lived in Ohio. After falling on some very difficult times and suffering devastating loss in his personal life, he later found himself struggling with alcoholism, depression and suicidal thoughts.</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field__item"> <div class="paragraph paragraph--type--full-width-text paragraph--view-mode--default"> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-content field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item"><p>LaValley set out to change the trajectory of his life, packing up and moving to North Carolina in 2008 to work as part of a Driver Development Program for a NASCAR Truck Series team in North Carolina. Since childhood, he had been an avid fan — specifically of Dale Earnhardt.&nbsp;</p> <p>“It finally hit me at the Martinsville Speedway how money played a big role in the success getting to where I wanted to be,” LaValley said. “I saw that was out of reach for someone who didn’t have that money aspect. I got discouraged, got out and moved back to New York.”</p> <p>Moving home in 2009 also granted him the opportunity to help his mom care for his grandmother, until her passing. The trio watched countless episodes of the television series, “NCIS,” starring Mark Harmon as Special Agent Gibbs, whose character experienced tragedies and struggles. LaValley began studying Gibbs’ character and loosely incorporating certain traits into his own life to overcome the demons that were still chasing him.</p> <p>“By watching this character trudge through these struggles and slowly turn them into positives, I was able to restructure my life into the positive it is today,” he powerfully states on his website.</p> <p>At about the same time, his former high school choir teacher asked if he would accept the role of Jonathan Brewster in “Arsenic and Old Lace.” He readily agreed and fell in love with performing. He works with them on personal issues, school issues, class work, peer conflicts and family conflicts.&nbsp;</p> <p>On Aug. 10, Instant Admit Day &amp; Orientation at Norwich, Stewart worked with the summer program, where he is bringing middle-schoolers to campus and other places, such as Norwich Meadows, Rogers Center and Chenango State Park.&nbsp;</p> <p>“The kids get out to do stuff in a structured setting,” he said. “They are building skills without even knowing they are doing it.”&nbsp;</p> <p>He plans to continue his education with sights set on becoming a substance abuse counselor — with ĚŇ×ÓĘÓƵ on his short list of potential colleges.&nbsp;<br><br> &nbsp;</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author field--type-entity-reference field--label-inline"> <div class="field__label">Author</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/author-profiles/jeff-macharyas" hreflang="en">Jeff Macharyas</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-published-date field--type-datetime field--label-inline"> <div class="field__label">Published date</div> <div class="field__item"><time datetime="2022-08-12T12:00:00Z" class="datetime">August 12, 2022</time> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-gallery field--type-image field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Gallery</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"> <a href="/sites/default/files/styles/max_1300x1300/public/news/gallery/zan-stewart-suny-morrisville-norwich.jpg?itok=Bg1mXEGc" aria-label="{&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;Zan Stewart&quot;}" role="button" title="Zan Stewart" data-colorbox-gallery="gallery-news-145631-dPk7HF_IIQg" class="colorbox" aria-controls="colorbox-Y6jFVcCAbEk" data-cbox-img-attrs="{&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;Zan Stewart&quot;}"> <img id="colorbox-Y6jFVcCAbEk" src="/sites/default/files/styles/medium_square_303_by_303_sc/public/news/gallery/zan-stewart-suny-morrisville-norwich.jpg?h=477b2078&amp;itok=1dSAuVet" width="303" height="303" alt="Zan Stewart" loading="lazy" class="image-style-medium-square-303-by-303-sc"> </a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-published-time field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">10 a.m. </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-inline"> <div class="field__label">News Type</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/category/academics" hreflang="en">Academics</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/category/business" hreflang="en">Business</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/category/community" hreflang="en">Community</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/category/general" hreflang="en">General</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/category/norwich-campus" hreflang="en">Norwich Campus</a></div> </div> </div> Fri, 12 Aug 2022 14:20:18 +0000 macharjp@morrisville.edu 145631 at ĚŇ×ÓĘÓƵ students named to Spring 2022 President's List and Dean's List /news/suny-morrisville-students-named-spring-2022-presidents-list-and-deans-list <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">ĚŇ×ÓĘÓƵ students named to Spring 2022 President's List and Dean's List</span> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>mercure@morris…</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2022-07-28T11:51:59-04:00" title="Thursday, July 28, 2022 - The campus also offers an A.A.S. degree in human services.</p> <p>The certificate program evolved from Chenango County human service agency leaders’ need for direct- support professionals and personal care assistants, according to Lindsey Lefevre, director of the Norwich Campus. “Their need far exceeds their ability to recruit and retain high-quality staff,” she said.</p> <p>“This certificate program offers a high-quality education and training for their employees, which is integral to providing high-quality care to the individuals and families that they serve,” said Julie Burton, assistant professor of social science and coordinator of the human services program.</p> <p>The seven three-credit classes offered through the certificate program include introductory human services and psychology classes, as well as more advanced classes in crisis intervention, counseling and case management, human services administration and abnormal psychology. Classes can be completed at students’ convenience or finished in as few as two semesters, and also can be taken at the Norwich Campus.&nbsp;</p> <p>All of the classes seamlessly transfer to the Norwich Campus human services A.A.S. degree. Completion of the certificate also leads to advanced standing status that allows students to complete the A.A.S. degree in one calendar year.&nbsp;</p> <p>Through the years, the Norwich Campus has provided the community with a well-trained workforce to meet its various needs. In addition to the associate degree and certificate program, the Norwich Campus operates a Human Services Institute.</p> <p>A resource for students, the college and local community, the institute develops ongoing partnerships and collaboration between the college’s human services program, faculty and staff, and human service professionals in Norwich and throughout Chenango and Madison counties.</p> <p>Partnering with human services agencies, the institute hosts trainings, conferences, professional development speakers and continuing education, and addresses quality-of-life issues that impact the community.</p> <p>For more information about the new human services certificate, contact Burton at <a href="mailto:burtonjc@morrisville.edu">burtonjc@morrisville.edu</a> or call 607.334.5144, ext. 5043.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author field--type-entity-reference field--label-inline"> <div class="field__label">Author</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/author-profiles/franci-valenzano" hreflang="en">Franci Valenzano</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-published-date field--type-datetime field--label-inline"> <div class="field__label">Published date</div> <div class="field__item"><time datetime="2020-07-16T12:00:00Z" class="datetime">July 16, 2020</time> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-published-time field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">2:30 p.m.</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-inline"> <div class="field__label">News Type</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/category/academics" hreflang="en">Academics</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/category/alumni" hreflang="en">Alumni</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/category/business" hreflang="en">Business</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/category/community" hreflang="en">Community</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/category/general" hreflang="en">General</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/category/norwich-campus" hreflang="en">Norwich Campus</a></div> </div> </div> Thu, 16 Jul 2020 18:32:04 +0000 valenzfr@morrisville.edu 77661 at ĚŇ×ÓĘÓƵ approved to return to campus, unveils return-to-campus plans for Morrisville and Norwich campuses /news/suny-morrisville-approved-return-campus-unveils-return-campus-plans-morrisville-and-norwich <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">ĚŇ×ÓĘÓƵ approved to return to campus, unveils return-to-campus plans for Morrisville and Norwich campuses</span> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>valenzfr@morri…</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2020-07-07T16:54:18-04:00" title="Tuesday, July 7, 2020 - 4:54pm" class="datetime">Tue, 07/07/2020 - 16:54</time> </span> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>MORRISVILLE, N.Y. — ĚŇ×ÓĘÓƵ has announced its plan to reopen campus this fall, after receiving approval from SUNY and meeting New York State Department of Health’s Reopening New York Higher Education Guidelines. Plans are subject to change due to new information, guidance and/or direction received from the State of New York and the Governor’s Office.</p> <p>The academic calendar offers a compressed schedule for Fall 2020, with classes resuming on Aug. 24 and all in-person instruction completed by Friday, Nov. 20. Any additional instruction or final work required after November Break (Nov. 25-27) will be completed through distance means, preventing the need for any return to campus to complete the semester.</p> <p>While campus life will look a little different when classes begin on Aug. 24, the college is taking all proper precautions and following health requirements to keep students, faculty, staff, visitors and the community safe, including lowering classroom density, wearing masks and social distancing at least six feet apart.</p> <p>Plans for campus safety include physical distancing, PPE, hygiene, cleaning and disinfecting, building protocols and screening.</p> <p>Classes will be a hybrid of remote and face-to-face learning, a mix that varies based on the activities in the class and allows for social distancing in the classroom.&nbsp;</p> <p>The college is also staggering residential move-in days over the week prior to classes beginning. Move-in dates will be Monday through Friday, Aug. 17-21, with a maximum of 200 students per day. Students will be required to submit a symptom questionnaire for review by Health Services 14 days prior to their move-in date. Upon arrival to campus, all students will have symptom screening and temperatures taken by Health Services staff.</p> <p>The campus’s additional measures require all students, employees and guests coming to campus or any of its facilities or events to successfully complete a self-monitoring COVID-19 exposure risk screening checklist for each day they are present, in addition to using a proper face covering or mask (PPE), as a prerequisite for engaging in institutional activities.</p> <p><a href="/return">See ĚŇ×ÓĘÓƵ’s reopening plan here</a>.</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author field--type-entity-reference field--label-inline"> <div class="field__label">Author</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/author-profiles/franci-valenzano" hreflang="en">Franci Valenzano</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-published-date field--type-datetime field--label-inline"> <div class="field__label">Published date</div> <div class="field__item"><time datetime="2020-07-07T12:00:00Z" class="datetime">July 7, 2020</time> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-gallery field--type-image field--label-above"> <div class="field__label">Gallery</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"> <a href="/sites/default/files/styles/max_1300x1300/public/news/gallery/Fall%202020%20Update-3.png?itok=N0Mw_E5Q" aria-label="{&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;ĚŇ×ÓĘÓƵ's Return-to-Campus Plan&quot;}" role="button" title="ĚŇ×ÓĘÓƵ's Return-to-Campus Plan" data-colorbox-gallery="gallery-news-77651-dPk7HF_IIQg" class="colorbox" aria-controls="colorbox-jccEtcUF2GA" data-cbox-img-attrs="{&quot;alt&quot;:&quot;ĚŇ×ÓĘÓƵ's Return-to-Campus Plan&quot;}"> <img id="colorbox-jccEtcUF2GA" src="/sites/default/files/styles/medium_square_303_by_303_sc/public/news/gallery/Fall%202020%20Update-3.png?h=57024e64&amp;itok=Wdy16Mea" width="303" height="303" alt="ĚŇ×ÓĘÓƵ's Return-to-Campus Plan" loading="lazy" class="image-style-medium-square-303-by-303-sc"> </a> </div> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-published-time field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">5 p.m.</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-inline"> <div class="field__label">News Type</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/category/coronavirus" hreflang="en">Coronavirus</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/category/academics" hreflang="en">Academics</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/category/alumni" hreflang="en">Alumni</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/category/business" hreflang="en">Business</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/category/community" hreflang="en">Community</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/category/general" hreflang="en">General</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/category/norwich-campus" hreflang="en">Norwich Campus</a></div> </div> </div> Tue, 07 Jul 2020 20:54:18 +0000 valenzfr@morrisville.edu 77651 at ĚŇ×ÓĘÓƵ Norwich Campus plans drive-thru commencement /news/suny-morrisville-norwich-campus-plans-drive-thru-commencement <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">ĚŇ×ÓĘÓƵ Norwich Campus plans drive-thru commencement</span> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>valenzfr@morri…</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2020-05-22T16:31:40-04:00" title="Friday, May 22, 2020 - 4:31pm" class="datetime">Fri, 05/22/2020 - 16:31</time> </span> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>NORWICH, N.Y. — ĚŇ×ÓĘÓƵ’s Norwich Campus will celebrate its graduates during a drive-thru ceremony on Wednesday, May 27, from 1-2 p.m., in the campus parking lot on Conkey Ave.</p> <p>Faculty and staff will be in full regalia, joined by bagpipers amid other pomp and circumstance.&nbsp;</p> <p>“We are in a unique position to do this, since our students live locally,” said Lindsey Lefevre, director of the Norwich Campus. “After speaking with faculty, we felt it was important to recognize our students and their hard work.”</p> <p>Approximately 50 students will graduate, 33 of them with a nursing degree. It will be held from 2 p.m. until supplies run out. To donate go to <a href="http://www.morrisville.edu/norwich-drive">www.morrisville.edu/norwich-drive</a>.</p> <p>So far, Chobani has committed to donating 100 cases of yogurt per drive-thru event. Items will vary from week to week, based on donations, with plans to include butter, cheese, milk, eggs, fresh fruits and vegetables, and nonperishable items for each family that participates.</p> <p>Additionally, the R.C. Smith Foundation, along with two additional anonymous foundations, have donated nearly $10,000 toward this effort. Local businesses, including Preferred Mutual Insurance, in addition to dozens of individual donors, have raised an additional $3,500 to purchase local products for the drive.</p> <p>Other quick facts:<br><br> Patrons will be given one bag per car.<br><br> Items will be placed in the trunk of the vehicle.<br><br> The milk, from Upstate Farms, is pasteurized.<br><br> Proper social distancing, safety and public health hygiene practices will be adhered to throughout the event. For others, it was their first chance to help.&nbsp;</p> <p>Seven human services students in Assistant Professor Julanne Burton’s Introduction to Human Services class, at the ĚŇ×ÓĘÓƵ Norwich Campus, are participating in a class project, Big Ideas About Poverty. &nbsp;</p> <p>Burton implemented the concept in her classroom three years ago after learning, from a United Way presentation about the ALICE (Asset-Limited, Income-Constrained, Employed) population, that a significant number of residents living in the Chenango County community are living either at or below the poverty level.</p> <p>Through the assignment, students conduct a critical action project around poverty in the local community, devise a plan; and actually carry it out.<br><br> &nbsp;&nbsp;<br><br> “It is a way for me and my students to give back to my community,” said Burton, herself a Chenango County resident, from Earlville. “Some of these students are going to stay in the area to work and I want to get them started in being a part of the community. I want them to reflect on the issue and the impact they can have on it.”&nbsp;</p> <p>Many people are unaware of what poverty looks like, according to Burton. “Even people with jobs could still be living below the poverty level,” she explained.<br><br> &nbsp;&nbsp;<br><br> “I thought it looked like someone wearing really baggy clothes, maybe the person who didn’t have good hygiene,” said Lillian Gallagher, of New Berlin. “Now I know that the person could look just like you and me and still be living in poverty.”&nbsp;</p> <p>Gallagher’s project involves helping Unadilla Valley Central School set up JT’s Cupboard, a room stocked with free clothing, prom dresses and tuxedoes on loan for anyone who can’t afford to buy them. The cupboard, named after former school board member Jamie Thompson, also carries school supplies and personal hygiene products.&nbsp;</p> <p>Gallagher went a step further, starting a peer group at the school, comprised of 15 children who meet to talk about their day and stress in their lives. &nbsp;</p> <p>“I did it to show them that they are not alone,” said Gallagher, who’s planning on a career as an advocate for victims or children. “I know how hard it is to be in middle school and high school today, and I would have loved a group like this. I am just trying to show the kids they are not alone in their struggles.”</p> <p>Cheyenne Miles, of Oxford, is assisting with the Backpack Food Program already in place in the Oxford School District. She helped obtain a generous donation from Chobani yogurt for the program, which fills weekend and holiday gaps for those in need who rely on free and reduced lunch and breakfast during the week.&nbsp;</p> <p>Two other students, Jason Burlew and Stephanie Ray, both of Norwich, are working with the Bandura Family &amp; Community Alliance, which was expanded to Norwich last year and provided 1,200 meals to families on Christmas Day.&nbsp;</p> <p>On Dec. 11, Burton’s class will meet with individuals and agencies in the community to discuss their projects, their impact and how they relate to larger issues around poverty.&nbsp;</p> <p>They will also share their experiences.</p> <p>“This project has really made me think more about poverty and what I can do to help,” Miles said.&nbsp;</p> <p>“I feel like I am making an impact,” Gallagher said. “And I am much more empathetic.”</p> <p>Burton’s class project was not the Norwich Campus’s first to help alleviate poverty in the community.&nbsp;<br><br> &nbsp;<br><br> In late November, the campus hosted Bridges Out of Poverty, an initiative which brought the community together to talk about and develop concrete tools to address poverty in Chenango County. The event, a collaboration among the Norwich Campus Human Services Institute, eHealthy Connections, Chenango Health Network and Improve Norwich Now, attracted nearly 100 participants.</p> <p>The following students are participating in Burton’s Big Ideas About Poverty project:&nbsp;<br><br> Jason Burlew, of Norwich<br><br> Lillian Gallagher, of New Berlin<br><br> Kaley Judge, of Sherburne<br><br> Cheyenne Miles, of Oxford<br><br> Stephanie Ray, of Norwich<br><br> Aubrey Root, of Earlville<br><br> Amy Walker, of Afton<br><br> &nbsp;</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author field--type-entity-reference field--label-inline"> <div class="field__label">Author</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/author-profiles/franci-valenzano" hreflang="en">Franci Valenzano</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-published-date field--type-datetime field--label-inline"> <div class="field__label">Published date</div> <div class="field__item"><time datetime="2019-12-05T12:00:00Z" class="datetime">December 5, 2019</time> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-published-time field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">2 p.m.</div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-inline"> <div class="field__label">News Type</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/category/academics" hreflang="en">Academics</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/category/community" hreflang="en">Community</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/category/general" hreflang="en">General</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/category/norwich-campus" hreflang="en">Norwich Campus</a></div> </div> </div> Thu, 05 Dec 2019 19:41:45 +0000 valenzfr@morrisville.edu 72466 at Building a Solar Empire /news/building-a-solar-empire <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">Building a Solar Empire</span> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>salibalr</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2019-11-22T09:11:28-05:00" title="Friday, November 22, 2019 - The 2.3-megawatt solar array helps power 373 households, reducing greenhouse gases by 1,430 metric tons annually, the equivalent of removing 306 cars from the road.</p> <p>The project came to life with the help of a group of graduates from ĚŇ×ÓĘÓƵ, who are leading the way in creating a community solar empire in Upstate New York.</p> <p>The growing industry harnesses the financial benefits of solar energy without the monetary investment by individual homeowners. Instead of installing solar panels on their own homes, customers subscribe or buy into larger scale solar installations. &nbsp;</p> <p>Community solar has been bolstered by New York State Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s mandate that half of all electricity consumed must come from renewable energy sources by 2030. The effort to support and scale sustainable solar is already seeing results, leveraging $2.8 billion in private investments and creating more than 12,000 solar jobs across the state since 2011.</p> <p>"Clean, renewable energy is critical to combating climate change and protecting our environment for current and future generations of New Yorkers," Cuomo said of the Endfield project developed by BlueRock Solar last year. "With the addition of this community solar project, we are continuing our commitment to a green future and to a more resilient, affordable energy grid."</p> <h3>Preparing students for the growing industry</h3> <p>ĚŇ×ÓĘÓƵ professor Philip Hofmeyer has been giving his students hands-on experience in solar panel installation for years, exposing them to “real” systems through community and campus projects.</p> <p>But while residential solar projects are still a big part of his curriculum, Hofmeyer has broadened his focus to include the growing industrial and community solar farms being planted across Upstate New York.</p> <p>Both the two- and four-year renewable energy degree programs are preparing students for the industry, from installation and maintenance to system design, optimization, permitting and project operations.</p> <p>Within the industry, the explosion of growth is referred to as the “solar coaster,” with developers trying to find ideal locations for large-scale arrays.</p> <p>Hofmeyer gets requests daily from employers looking for qualified students, who go on to high-paying jobs across the country in an industry that continues to grow.</p> <p>“We’ve been trying to be ahead of the curve, because this is the future,” he said. “It will help us balance out the grid.”</p> <h3>Buying into the future</h3> <p>Sam Doubleday came to ĚŇ×ÓĘÓƵ as an adult student wanting to learn more about the renewable energy industry. With an undergraduate degree in environmental science, Doubleday found his interest piqued with classes in wind turbines, bioenergy and micro-hydro.</p> <p>His required internship connected him with BlueRock Energy in Syracuse, New York, which turned into a full-time job working for their LED lighting and efficiency division.
When the company wanted to expand into solar energy projects, Doubleday jumped at the chance. He brought on fellow ĚŇ×ÓĘÓƵ alumnus Stephen Sgarlata, who was one of the first students to receive a bachelor’s degree in renewable energy in 2013.</p> <p>“New York is being very progressive, and we are poised for a lot of growth in the solar industry,” said Sgarlata, who also received an associate degree in automotive technology from Morrisville in 2003 before joining the military for five years of active duty. “It is definitely the future. More and more people are buying into this.”</p> <p>Sgarlata pointed out that in the past, people who couldn’t install their own solar panels would pay a premium to the utility to tap into renewable options.</p> <p>Now, by subscribing to a community solar project, customers can get green energy at a savings.</p> <p>“Everyone can be a part of renewable energy with community solar,” said Doubleday, project coordinator at BlueRock Solar. “By signing up, you are becoming part of the green community and helping propel the state’s strategic energy goals of more green energy generation and less fossil fuel usage.”</p> <p>Doubleday said the industry has also been a boon for farmers, who can contract with energy companies to put low-impact solar arrays on previously unusable land. Even the maintenance can be accomplished through agriculture; some solar projects partner with area farmers who bring their sheep to graze on the grass around the panels.</p> <p>“There are no moving parts and the fuel is free,” Doubleday said. “It’s a wonderful avenue to bring more green-generated electricity to the grid.”</p> <h3>Connecting customers</h3> <p>In the 1980s, Michael Roach studied environmental science at ĚŇ×ÓĘÓƵ; he returned in his 50s to pursue a degree in renewable energy.</p> <p>“Years ago, renewable energy was a good idea but it was far too expensive to be viable,” he said. “But now, the market changes have brought it to the forefront and New York State has created a pretty supportive ecosystem for this kind of activity.”</p> <p>Now a solar project developer for RER Energy Group and its sister company, Sunvestment Energy Group, Roach helps connect potential customers — including municipalities and nonprofits — with the financial benefits associated with the community solar farms.</p> <p>He also educates customers about the benefit of choosing a community solar project that hires local contractors and uses local banks to finance panels.</p> <p>“We are generating electricity that goes into distribution on the grid right outside our house,” he said. “It is generated locally and it stays local. That is the model that brings the most benefit to the local community.”</p> <h3>A bright future</h3> <p>When Meghan Way began her degree in renewable energy at ĚŇ×ÓĘÓƵ, she was one of two women in her class.</p> <p>She quickly found her place in the program, where the concepts covered in class lectures are reinforced by working on live systems on campus. Her diverse curriculum included climbing outdoor power towers and donning some unexpected accessories.</p> <p>“Never in my life did I think I would ever purchase a welding helmet,” she said with a laugh. “But the whole program was a really good fit. The professors were knowledgeable and always willing to help.”</p> <p>An internship during her senior year turned into her first full-time job as a permitting and development administrator for a residential wind turbine company in Western New York.</p> <p>Since then, she has dabbled in a variety of green energy industries, including overseeing state certification and on-site issues for a geothermal installation company.</p> <p>Currently, she works for SMSA Architectural Services as an alternative energy specialist, helping determine whether solar, geothermal, wind or other resources are a good fit for new residential and commercial builds.</p> <p>Way said the future is bright in the renewable energy industry.</p> <p>“There are so many more options than just burning fossil fuels,” she said. “We can do so much to generate our own electricity, to make it as efficient as possible.”</p> <p>And the reputation of the renewable energy programs at ĚŇ×ÓĘÓƵ has also been growing.</p> <p>“The program has really made a name for itself,” she said.</p> <h3>Internship opens doors</h3> <p>The explosion of community solar projects across Upstate New York had a technical assist from another ĚŇ×ÓĘÓƵ alumnus.</p> <p>Colton Evans ’16 came to Morrisville to play football as an outside linebacker, where he was named a USA Division III College Football Preseason All-American. Initially pursuing a degree in health performance and sports nutrition, he later changed his focus to web development and management because of the career potential.</p> <p>During his senior year, Evans secured a 12-week internship at BlueRock Energy with the help of fellow alumnus Sam Doubleday, who needed website assistance for the upcoming solar projects.</p> <p>The relationship led to a full-time position at BlueRock as a marketing analyst upon graduation, with Evans handing the emails, digital advertisements and targeted marketing on social media for the growing solar enterprise. He worked to create a more secure online contract to help retain customers and encourage them to enroll in the upcoming arrays.</p> <p>“There’s so much that people don’t think about when they turn on their lights,” Evans said.</p> <p>Evans now works as a pricing manager for SmartestEnergy, tracking the electricity industry and creating pricing models.</p> <p>He said his internship at ĚŇ×ÓĘÓƵ led him into his bright career path.</p> <p>“It opened the door into this industry that I have never even thought of pursuing,” Evans said.</p> <h3>How community solar works</h3> <p>Instead of installing solar panels on their homes or businesses, customers can subscribe or invest in community solar arrays.</p> <p>The large-scale installation creates electricity that is fed into the local power grid.</p> <p>Subscribers will see lower monthly electricity bills, and additional benefits include reduced greenhouse gas emissions and investment in local communities.</p> <p>Source: NY-Sun, a project of NYSERDA</p> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-author field--type-entity-reference field--label-inline"> <div class="field__label">Author</div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/author-profiles/alaina-potrikus-beckett" hreflang="en">Alaina Potrikus Beckett</a></div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-published-date field--type-datetime field--label-inline"> <div class="field__label">Published date</div> <div class="field__item"><time datetime="2019-11-22T12:00:00Z" class="datetime">November 22, 2019</time> </div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-news-type field--type-entity-reference field--label-inline"> <div class="field__label">News Type</div> <div class="field__items"> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/category/academics" hreflang="en">Academics</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/category/alumni" hreflang="en">Alumni</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/category/general" hreflang="en">General</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/category/momentum" hreflang="en">Momentum</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/category/momentum-issue" hreflang="en">Momentum Issue</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/category/fall-2019" hreflang="en">Fall 2019</a></div> <div class="field__item"><a href="/news/category/norwich-campus" hreflang="en">Norwich Campus</a></div> </div> </div> Fri, 22 Nov 2019 14:11:28 +0000 salibalr 72131 at
