There’s no mistaking Rebecca Hargrave’s love for arboriculture and all things trees.
The Ƶ professor’s enthusiasm toward the field and her innovative, hands-on learning have spirited students and spread to a campus and community.
Most recently, Hargrave, associate professor of environmental science & arboriculture, received the 2022 Research & Education Award from the New York State Arborists, ISA Chapter, in recognition of the work she has done on important research and education to foster improvement in the arboricultural industry.
Ƶ nursing student Lilly Kairewich, of Chittenango, is the recipient of the 2022 Curt Greene Memorial Scholarship and the Sweet Karen Scholarship.
“The selection committee immediately recognized the aptitude of Lilly,” said Ellen Taylor, Harness Horse Youth Foundation (HHYF) executive director. “While not from a racing family, Lilly will always love harness racing and appreciate what her HHYF experiences taught her which will help both in her collegiate efforts as well as in life”
Dylan Rees, a student in Ƶ’s technology management bachelor’s degree program, is spreading his disc golf talent to the community.
Instead of a usual internship, Rees launched a startup business, Flying Mile Disc Golf, as part of his entrepreneurship practicum in associate professor Tom Pilewski’s class.
Rees’s business offers course design, individual lessons, merchandise sales and tournament planning and operations, including running events on-location.
Ƶ can be spotted throughout this year’s Great New York State Fair, which runs Wednesday, Aug. 24-Monday, Sept. 5.
MORRISVILLE, NY — Ƶ alumnus Andrew O’Connell is gearing up for a busy year. He crushed the Men’s US STIHL® Rookie Championships in Little Rock, Arkansas, July 21, taking home a gold medal, setting a national rookie record and landing a spot in the STIHL® Rookie World Championships in Sweden next year.
Training starts now for the world event, O’Connell said in a recent telephone interview.
“The two months leading up to the US rookie finals, I was training about 20 hours a week after work,” O’Connell said.
Ƶ’s Norwich Campus was a great start for Zan Stewart and he is on track to do great things.
Stewart, a native of Norwich, New York, graduated from Norwich High School in 2015 and then took a gap year, living in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, before returning to his hometown and enrolling at Ƶ’s Norwich Campus, where he graduated with his degree in human services in 2019.

And it led his Fall 2019 class to be published in the Journal of North American Herpetology.

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. — Ƶ students Kirsten Florio and Marcus Castleberry have been honored with the SUNY Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence (CASE).
The prestigious award recognizes students who have best demonstrated integration of academic excellence with accomplishments in the areas of leadership, athletics, community service, creative and performing arts, campus involvement, or career achievement. It is the highest honor bestowed upon a student by SUNY.
